On 23 January 2020, fans of the worldwide phenomenon were surprised by the announcement that Season 12 of RuPaul’s Drag Race will premiere on the 28th of February. Many were expecting the latest season of RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars, but instead were greeted with thirteen new queens all looking to be America’s Next Drag Superstar. In a video introduced by Season 11 winner Yvie Oddly, the thirteen took to the runway in a special RuVeal.
The thirteen came out in a scene reminiscent of an underground car park and walked the runway wearing grittier and more jagged outfits than the usual Drag Race fare. Many of them looked great doing so; this reveal video felt very much in spirit with Yvie Oddly’s aestethic.
The promotion images for this season were then released. I can’t help but be reminded of a challenge in Season 3 where the queens had to dress up in patriotic drag and record a message for touring soldiers. The theme is red, white and blue, whilst feeling very celebratory and patriotic, slightly different from the underground movement conveyed in the runway promotion video.

From left to right in this promotion picture, the thirteen queens competing in Season 12 of RuPaul’s Drag Race are:
Heidi N Closet | Ramseur, North Carolina |
Gigi Goode | Los Angeles, California |
Widow Von’Du | Kansas City, Missouri |
Crystal Methyd | Springfield, Missouri |
Jackie Cox | New York, New York |
Nicky Doll | New York, New York |
