Good evening everyone, and welcome to another post on The Blogging DJ. Today I will be continuing to look in-depth at each of the forty-one entrants for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, this year taking place in Tel Aviv. In this post we are off to Prague, to focus on the Czech Republic’s entry, Lake Malawi and “Friend of a Friend”.
Selection Process
As they did last year, the Czech broadcaster Česká televize organised a national selection to decide their entry for this year’s contest. There were over three hundred submissions and eight were picked to enter the finals, where the audience could vote for their favourite entry for two weeks via the Eurovision. Lake Malawi triumphed by dominating the jury vote and coming second in the televoting segment. It has also been announced that the Czech Republic will perform in the first half of semi-final one in Tel Aviv.

The Czech Republic surprised everyone (in a good way) last year when “Lie to Me” was released. This year’s entry follows a similar vein, that chill, too-cool-for-school vibe, and it makes for a decent track in something like a film, where only a 30 second snippet would be played. As a song intended for a live performance, there is nowhere near enough build. Whilst it is sweetly and cheekily sung, live it falls very flat as the song fails to go in any meaningful direction. There would have to be a pretty momentous turnaround to get this into the Grand Final. 5.5

Odds
According to Oddschecker, you can currently get odds ranging from 50/1 to 100/1 on the Czech Republic making the Grand Final. This suggests that bookmakers and betters see this country as being on the cusp between qualifying and missing out, yet may just creep through.
Record at Eurovision
The Czech Republic have competed in the Eurovision Song Contest seven times since making their debut in 2007, qualifying to the Grand Final on two occasions. In 2016, Gabriela Gunčíková became the first Czech representative to progress, finishing twenty-fifth overall. Last year, Mikolas Josef got the country’s best result ever, claiming sixth place with his catchy song “Lie to Me”.

The song is very funky and danceable but 3 minutes of it seem a bit long at times. I still hope it qualifies and reaches the left side of the leader board
