Today I will be continuing to look in-depth at each of the forty-one songs competing in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 by focusing on the Greek act, Katerine Duska and “Better Love”. After missing out on the Grand Final for only the second time last year, will Europe love this entry more?
Selection Process
Over the years, the Greek broadcasters have switched fairly often between organising a national final and an internal selection to pick their entries for Eurovision. As was the case last year, ERT chose their act behind closed doors. After months of speculation, Katerine Duska was announced as the act on the 14th of February, with the song being released to the public on the 6th of March. It has also been announced that Greece will perform in the second half of semi-final one, being drawn in the second-to-last slot at number sixteen.

The star of this whole package is Katerine’s vocals. Warm, rich and full of layers, this isn’t some bland autotuned voice. There is an assurance to her vocals, making you listen to every word she is singing. The music blends well with this, creating an anthemic feel to this entry without heading down the obvious route. The three minutes certainly fly by when listening to this; it is a very high quality studio cut. I still have concerns about how whether the energy would be present live, hopefully a live video will silence those fears. Overall, I can see Greece doing very well with this, as long as Katerine isn’t alone on stage performing. 8

Odds
According to Oddschecker, you can currently get odds ranging from 14/1 to 20/1 on Greece winning the Eurovision Song Contest 2019. This means that bookmakers and betters have this song as being inside the top ten, and might be worth a punt if you believe in the song’s ability live. The odds will probably change when the song is performed live.
Record at Eurovision
Greece have entered the Eurovision Song Contest on thirty-nine occasions since making their debut in 1974. They have only missed out on qualifying for the Grand Final on two occasions, 2016 and 2018. At the moment they have won the contest only once, when Helena Paparizou triumphed with “My Number One”. Last year, despite being a fan favourite, Yianna Terzi missed out on qualification, coming home in fourteenth place in her semi-final.

This has grown on me a lot since I first heard it. I liked it from the beginning but it has now become one of my favourites, difficult to get out my head sometimes. I agree that their choice of live performance will be interesting to see – for a song of this tempo it will be tricky.
